Who I am

Hi. I'm Judi, the tech editor behind Friendly Tech Editor. I live in Colorado, USA and I edit knitting patterns. My focus is on helping you create knitter-friendly patterns--patterns that your knitters will enjoy knitting.

I come to tech editing from having been a technical writer my whole adult life. Technical writers are trained to focus on the audience (the people who will be knitting your patterns). This gives me the mind set to read your pattern as one of your customers would. I can point out things that might be ambiguous or unclear. Technical writers are also trained to focus on consistency. This has taught me to notice the small details in your pattern that might cause confusion.

To learn the skills specific to tech editing for knitting, I have taken classes from Joeli Creates and Jill Wolcott's A System of Grading. Also, I am a lifelong knitter, crocheter, and sewer which makes me familiar with garment construction. I have been a freelance tech editor since 2015.

Tech editing is all that I do. I don't design. I don't teach. I don't own a yarn store. I don't have my own competing deadlines. Tech editing is what I'm good at and what I love to do! I can make sure that your pattern will make sense to the average knitter, because I am the average knitter.

What you can expect

Use the Contact me button in the blue box and I will respond within 1-2 business days. I will ask you to send me your PDF pattern to verify the work and the price. If you agree that you want to proceed, I will start tech editing your pattern. Tech editing usually takes 3 days to 1 week. Tech editing includes checking the pattern for numerical accuracy, consistency, completeness, clarity, grammar, spelling, and knitter-friendliness.

What I charge

I charge $40 for any pattern up to 3 pages and $10 for each additional page. This price includes the initial tech edit to find the majority of the errors and a second tech edit to make sure that all the changes were incorporated correctly and to find any additional errors.

I can also draw charts and schematics for you. Please contact me for a quote on these additional services.
